Yasuko Hughes

Yasuko Hughes, 91, passed away on July 19, 2024, at Ansley Park Health & Rehabilitation in Newnan, Georgia on July 19, 2024. She was born March 15, 1933, in Naha City, Okinawa to the late Tsuru Toma but was raised by her late maternal grandmother Kamado Toma. 

Yasuko was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Hughes of Coal Run and a brother Jinsei Kadekaru of Okinawa, Japan.  Yasuko is survived by her only child, Anna Duperre (Jacques) of Newnan, GA and her beloved grandchildren, Noah and Natalie Duperre.  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and family in the United States and Okinawa. 

As a young woman, she worked on Kadena AFB in Okinawa where she met and married Glen.  She emigrated to the United States in 1961 with Glen and their daughter Anna.  Upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, the family returned to his hometown of Coal Run where she happily lived until 2001.  After the death of Glen, Yasuko retired from Marietta College where she was a housekeeper and moved to Smyrna, GA to live with Anna and her husband Jacques.  Shortly after moving to Georgia she achieved her dream of becoming a grandmother when Noah was born later that year and then Natalie followed 2 years later.  She was happiest watching them grow, attending school events, cheering them on in sports and lovingly packing their lunches or snacks.  In return, they loved and doted on her throughout the rest of her life. 

Yasuko’s wishes were to be cremated and brought back to Ohio.  Funeral services will be at 11 am Saturday, August 3, 2024, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly.  Visitation will begin at 10 am.  We welcome any family, friends or acquaintances to join us and share our happy memories.  Online condolences may be made by visiting www.mccurdyfh.com.
