James Elliott Obituary

James Ronald Elliott, 89, of Beverly, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 27, with his children by his side.  He was born on Sunday, January 8, 1933, in Wheeling West Virginia to the late George L. and Lyla L. (Burriss) Elliott.  He spent his early years in Smithfield, Ohio, before moving to Marietta, Zanesville and eventually Beverly, where he lived for many years. He graduated from Zanesville High School in 1951 and went to work in his father’s oil distribution business.  He later served in the United States Army during the Korean campaign, completing his basic training at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and was later stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and Fort Sheridan, Illinois.  He spent the majority of his service career at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he received training as a medic.

He attended Marietta College, graduating in 1959 with degrees in business and economics.  While at Marietta, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Following graduation, he again worked for his father and finally the Ohio Power Company/American Electric Power at the Muskingum River Plant in Beverly, first as a coal handler and later in the utility department.  In 1970 he was named personnel/human resources supervisor, a position he held until his retirement in 1995.

Ron was a longtime member of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge in Beverly, the Scottish Rite of Cambridge, Ohio, and the Marietta Shrine Club.  He was a member of Lowell American Legion Post 750,  a longtime member of the Beverly Presbyterian Church, and a past member of the Beverly Lions Club.  He proudly served as Chairman of the Board of the Citizens Bank Company in Beverly, and as a board member of Muskingum Valley Bancshares, Beverly, Ohio.

He is survived by his son, Michael Allen, and his wife Stacy of Marietta, Ohio and his daughter, Pamela Diane, of Poland, Ohio.  Also surviving are two grandchildren, Patrick and Andrew Elliott, of Marietta and a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Alfred Wolfe of Beverly.  Also surviving are brother and sister-in-law Richard and Annita Crawford of Export, Pennsylvania, along with his niece Karen (Mark) Pagano, Kenneth (Amber) Crawford, and Robert (Karen) Crawford, all residing in the greater Pittsburgh Area.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Diane Elliott, who died on June 3, 2020.              In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Thomas David Elliott.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 30, at 11:00 AM at the Beverly Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Thomas O’Connor presiding.  Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 29, from 5:00-8:00 pm at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly.  Online condolences may be made by visiting www.mccurdyfh.com.

Ron was a lover of animals, especially dogs of all shapes and sizes.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to be made to the Marietta Community Foundation-Sheriff’s Office K-9 (Washington County Career Center) Fund, PO Box 77, Marietta.

The family would like to thank Dr. H.L. Krupadev and his staff, Dr. Bradley Carman, and the wonderful staff of Selby General Hospital for their outstanding care and compassion during Ron’s final few days.
